Reiki Level 1 concentrates on self-healing: you are attuned, learn the hand positions, and build a daily practice on yourself. Reiki Level 2 adds the three sacred symbols, mental and emotional healing, and the ability to send Reiki to another person at a distance. In short, Level 1 is for you; Level 2 is for others.

Most students in India learn both levels together because they intend to help family and clients. But the two levels do different work, and skipping the first one properly is the most common mistake.

Reiki Level 1 - what you learn

  • Attunement: the process by which a Reiki master opens your energy channels. It is quiet, non-invasive and requires no belief.
  • A brief history: Mikao Usui, the five Reiki principles, and how the practice was passed down.
  • The standard hand positions: head, face, throat, chest, abdomen, back, knees and feet.
  • Self-healing practice: how to give yourself a full session, and a 15-minute daily routine for stress and sleep.
  • Chakras and energy basics: what the seven chakras are and how imbalance is described in Reiki.

Duration: usually one to two days of in-person training, or a few weeks of guided classes online. Practice after: daily self-Reiki for at least 21 days is the traditional suggestion, because the practice, not the certificate, is what makes you comfortable.

Reiki Level 2 - what you learn

  • The three sacred symbols: the power symbol, the mental/emotional symbol and the distance symbol, with their traditional uses and mantras.
  • Healing another person: full session structure for a client, opening and closing, hygiene, consent and boundaries.
  • Emotional and mental healing: working with habits, anxiety patterns and old emotional weight.
  • Distance healing: sending Reiki to a person, an event or a past situation at an agreed time.
  • Session ethics: what a practitioner may claim, and how to work alongside doctors and therapists.

Duration: typically one to two days of training, or several weeks online. Many students take Level 2 a few weeks to a few months after Level 1, once self-healing has become a habit.

Which level should you start with?

  • Start at Level 1 if you mainly want a relaxation and self-care practice, or if you are unsure how far you want to take it.
  • Take both together if you intend to give sessions to family or clients, or if you already know you enjoy energy-work practices such as yoga or meditation.
  • Never skip Level 1 even if you plan to go further - the self-healing habit is what makes Level 2 work in practice.

How long does certification take?

Level 1 can be completed in a weekend and Level 2 shortly after. Our own course runs over six months of weekly sessions with recordings, which gives time for practice between modules - Reiki Level 1 & 2 course. After both levels you can give sessions, though most students take several months of practice before charging clients.

What Reiki certification does not mean

  • It does not license you to treat medical conditions - Reiki is a complementary wellness practice.
  • It does not replace medical, psychological or physiotherapy care.
  • It does not guarantee income; that depends on practice, presentation and local demand.

Frequently asked questions

How soon can I take Level 2 after Level 1?

Traditionally a few weeks to a few months, once self-healing has become a regular habit. There is no benefit in rushing, and no fixed rule beyond the teacher's guidance.

Do I need Level 2 to send Reiki to my family?

In the traditional system, yes - distance healing and treating others belong to Level 2. Some teachers allow distant work after Level 1, but that is not the classical approach.

Can I learn Reiki online?

Yes. Attunements and guided practice can be given online, which is how many students outside Amritsar learn. In-person training is also available in Amritsar if you prefer hands-on correction.

Is a Reiki certificate valid everywhere?

Reiki certification is not a regulated licence anywhere. What matters is your teacher's lineage, your training hours and above all your own practice.
